In 2018, a team of mathematicians discovered the 50th Mersenne prime, a type of prime number that can be written in the form 2^p - 1, where p is also a prime number. This particular Mersenne prime, 2^82,589,933 - 1, was found using a distributed computing project called Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS). The number is so large that it would take a computer thousands of years to factorize it, making it one of the most secure prime numbers in existence.
